Nepali Congress: Rival factions prepare strategies ahead of district presidents’ gathering

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has called a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee for 4 pm in Hetaunda of Makawanpur district today. The meeting will discuss preparations for the party’s district presidents’ gathering.

The gathering will begin in Hetaunda on Tuesday. It will last for three days.

Meanwhile, two rival factions of the party–one led by Deuba and another led by Ram Chandra Paudel among others–are trying hard to turn the party equation on their sides from the gathering.

Both Deuba and Paudel-led factions have prepared their own strategies for the meet. As other influential leaders of the party including Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Arjun Narsingha KC and Kul Bahadur Gurung have also joined anti-Deuba camp, it is likely that the gathering will make Deuba little weaker in the party organisation.

The party leaders are at odds over the loss in the three elections held last year and are blaming each other for the historic debacle.

The Paudel-led group will also pressuriae the party leadership to hold the mahasamiti meeting and the general convention at the earliest.

As the party’s district presidents have gathered in Hetaunda of Makawanpur for a three-day meeting, the youth leaders–namely: Chandra Bhandari, Dhana Raj Gurung, Gagan Thapa, Jeevan Pariyar, Guru Raj Ghimire, Pradeep Paudel, Ram Krishna Yadav, and Kiran Yadav–have called them to press the party leadership for holding conventions of local and provincial level committees by the end of current Nepali year (mid-April 2019). They have argued that the 14th national general convention of the party must be organised in February-March 2020; therefore concluding conventions of lower committees should be an immediate priority as it also takes time. Otherwise, the party will lose next provincial and parliamentary elections, to be held in 2022, they have warned. The leaders have distributed a three-page letter to all participants of the meeting. “Do you think a strong opposition role is possible with current style, leadership and ideological confusion? No!” the letter reads, “Now, it is essential to finalise a new mission of the Congress so that its organisation can carry a new agenda for the new era. We also need to elect a new leadership capable for that.” If that happens, the party will prepare itself for upcoming local, provincial and federal parliamentary elections, according to them.
